Carlson Gelbvieh Farms and Carlson Cattle Company
This is a third generation farm/ranch which was started in 1928 by Carl Thure Carlson and currently consists of 3760 acres of deeded mixed pasture and hay land. Albert and Lon Carlson had jointly operated Carlson Gelbvieh Farms for over 20 years, specializing in Purebred Gelbvieh cattle which Albert imported directly from Germany in 1972. They participated in the show circuit for many years, winning many awards, and actively promoting the breed both locally and world wide. They have shipped embyros and semen throughout the world and as such their herd name (Gold Star) and breeding is well known in Mexico, New Zealand and Australia. In 1990 they complemented their breeding herd by introducing purebred Red Angus into the operation.

Albert and Lon have always been interested in genetic testing and in 2005 Lon concentrated the DNA testing on the Leptin genes, with all animals in the herd being tested by Quantum Genetics in Saskatoon. Lon also tests their herd sires for RFI (residual feed intake) in order to improve efficiencies in the herd. (For more info on Leptin and RFI see: What is Leptin? )
In early 2011, Albert decided it was time to retire. Lon and his wife Lorraine (Beaudin) decided to relocate the heart of the operation to their acreage and home near Magrath, Alberta, and began Carlson Cattle Company.
The Carlson's have been life time supporters of the 4-H program with all of Albert's children going through 4-H (Albert was also club leader for years and is now an honorary member) and more recently Lon and Lorraine's four kids (Kolten, Conor, Sidney and Alison) participated in 4-H from 2002-2012. For details on how Carlson cattle have performed in 4-H, read: Kid's in 4-H.
